My name is Michael, and my fluffy companion here is Athena. By day, I'm an electrical engineer, but I have harbored a passion for woodworking for many years. Countless hours spent practicing the craft, studying the artistry of woodworking masters, and honing my skills have made it clear that this was more than just a hobby to me.
Today, I'm proud to call Electric Fields Woodworking my own. This farm serves as the foundation of my creative spirit, nurturing my passion for woodworking and paving the way for countless more remarkable creations. I hope I’ll be able to create a piece of artwork that you’ll cherish for many years to come.
About
Behind the Scenes
The making of wooden 3D topographic maps
Totally Topographical
Topographic maps are a way to represent changing elevation for a given area. Traditionally shown as contour lines on a 2D plane, 3D topographic maps are instead like scale models of the landscape. True to scale and filled with detail, these maps let you revisit your favorite places and explore new locations, all from the comfort of your home.
Crazy Carvings
Powered by an X-Carve CNC router by Inventables, maps are cut from the wood of your choice.
Laser Lightshow
Using a laser from JTech Photonics, features such as roadways and rivers are burned onto the map. I wrote my own scripts to create the path for the machine, meaning the laser will remain in focus throughout any change in elevation, allowing maps to have a smooth profile rather than stepped layers in many other laser-cut wooden topographic maps.
