Frequently Asked Questions.
-
Absolutely, before carving operations begin you will contacted with a preview to provide feedback and request any changes.

For premade designs, it generally takes a few days to finish all the operations on the CNC machine, and - if applicable - make the frame and assemble all the pieces. For custom designs, add a few more days for creating the design before firing up the CNC.
Additionally, orders are generally processed in the order they’re received. Once it’s your turn in the queue, it will be three to four days for standard designs, or about a week for custom designs.
If you have a specific date in mind, please reach out before ordering. We are happy to accommodate rush orders but there may be restrictions based on available stock and upcoming holidays or vacation.

Low-resolution datasets are available globally with 7.5 arc-second resolution, or ~225 meters. Within the United States, there is seamless coverage at 1/3 arcsecond resolution, or ~10 meters. In some areas of the Continental United States, high resolution datasets are available in 1 meter resolution.
At minimum a general location or description of the area is necessary to get started, but if you want to provide a specific set of coordinates that works even better! Map outlines can follow virtually any border; rivers, state boundaries, or even just an arbitrary shape.

Data for features (and map outlines) comes from OpenStreetMap, if you’re curious what data is available you can check it out for yourself here or ask us via the Contact page.
However, data not being available on OpenStreetMap doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t be included. Other maps, aerial photography, or similar references can be used to manually add features to the design.

Not on the map itself, but lettering/symbols/etc. on a frame is totally free! Enter any relevant information into the “Additional Information” form when checking out.

Flocking is purchased from Flocking Unlimited, and they have 50 color options available. If you’d prefer something other than Black, you can indicate that when ordering via the “Additional Information” form in checkout.

Yes, with some restrictions. Our local saw mill has a limited selection of wood species, however it may be possible to acquire other species to meet requests. If you have a specific wood species in mind, contact us to find out if it’s possible to use in a design.

All maps are finished with WATCO® Danish Oil, in Natural color. It provides a nice amber tint and decent waterproofing without significantly coloring the wood.
If you prefer a different finish, please specify that when ordering via the “Additional Information” form in checkout. We recommend shying away from anything that would leave a reflective layer on the surface (i.e. - poly).

Many places online recommend reapplying Danish Oil at least once a year, but typically this would be for bookshelves, desks, and other items that are used regularly. Since these are artwork display pieces, that could easily be extended to every other year or longer. Use your discretion, if you’re displaying this in an area of direct sunlight (UV damage) or high traffic (it will be handled often), consider reapplying more frequently.
Using a lint free rag (old cotton shirt clippings work great), lightly dampen it with mineral spirits and gently wipe the surface to remove any built-up dirt and dust. Then coat the surface with a small amount of Danish Oil. Wait 15 minutes, then buff off with a clean rag.
Do not sand or buff the top surface of the map with anything other than a soft rag. The etched markings from the laser can easily be destroyed by abrasives such as sandpaper or steel wool.

We reserve the right to deny any requests we feel are inappropriate. However there aren’t really any general restrictions on locations or features. If you’re unsure about anything regarding a design you’d like to see, reach out and we would be happy to provide feedback.
